eBay Selling Limit

If you’ve received a message telling you that you have just reached your eBay selling limits then you’re probably a bit frustrated. You may be wondering what these limits are, how long they last, and if you can get them removed.

In this article we’ll look at each kind of eBay selling limit and tell you exactly how to get those limits raised or removed. But first let’s look at why these limits were created in the first place. It wasn’t just to frustrate new sellers. There actually are some good reasons.

Why Selling Limits Were Created

eBay created limits to protect themselves and their customers. In the old days scammers frequently started new eBay profiles with no intention of ever sending expensive items to their customers. Many times these scammers would post dozens of top dollar items at once and after they got the payments they would disappear. So eBay began imposing limits on new sellers to deter this from happening.

Now you have to prove that you are a legitimate seller before eBay will take your training wheels off. You can’t just post dozens of items. You have to do it one by one to build your reputation plus take steps to confirm your identity and then eBay will let you sell larger quantities.

The 3 Types Limits

There are 3 types of eBay restrictions you might run into. They are account limits, category limits, and item limits. Here are the details of each and what you can do about them individually.

Account Limits

New eBay sellers a have a limit on the total amount of listings they can have each month. The total consists of active listings and listings that have ended in a successful sale. Listings that have ended without a sale do not count towards the limit.

You can find out what your limits are by going to your My eBay page, then selecting the All Selling option in the Sell section on the left side of the page (or in the Selling Manager Summary). The Monthly Selling Limits Section will show your current selling activity and your monthly limits. You’ll also see an alert that lets you know if you won’t be able to sell any more items in a given month.

You can get these limits raised in one of two ways. The first is to just wait for the monthly automatic evaluations that eBay gives you. Provided you’ve met the requirements your limits will be raised on the first day of the next month. The second way is to request a raise directly. Usually there is a link provided to do so when you receive your first limit message. You can follow that link and request a higher account limit by confirming your personal information or by linking to an established account.

Category limits

Certain “sensitive” categories have additional limits for sellers beyond the regular new seller account limits. These categories include cameras, clothing, computers, electronics, and jewelry. The additional limitations apply to anyone who:

  • Hasn’t had a sale in the past 90 days.
  • Hasn’t sold multiple items in a particular category before.
  • Hasn’t sold in a particular category in over a year
  • Has cases opened for more than 3% of their total transactions in the last year.

There isn’t a direct way to get these limitations removed. You must wait for an evaluation and show eBay that you can establish a positive selling history in a given “sensitive” category before they will let you list higher quantities. Since you’re intentionally limited, you’ll have to do this one sale at a time.

Item limits

Beyond the account and category limits there are also individual limits on some “sensitive” items. These are the typically counterfeited goods like expensive brand name items.

To get your item limits raised you have to establish your selling history and earn a reputation as someone who sells authentic items. Once you’ve sold a few of these “sensitive” items and received positive feedback from your buyers you can request that your limits be raised. The factors you’ll be evaluated on are:

  • Positive buyer feedback.
  • No unresolved cases with buyers.
  • Selling history (minimum 3 months) and activity as a seller on the site.
  • Absence of feedback questioning the authenticity of the item(s).
  • History of following eBay policies.
  • General good standing of the account.
